Alexis Cooney
Research Analyst
Alexis Cooney is a Research Analyst with the NCJA Data Center. In this position, she will be assisting with the collection, synthesis, and reporting of data to better inform and serve the various NCJA collaborators. She will also be working on the Justice Counts initiative to establish a centralized location for justice practitioners and policymakers to have access to the necessary information for data-informed decision-making.
Prior to joining NCJA, Alexis worked with NVDRS data to help undercover contemporary trends in older adult victimization and provide recommendations for victim services providers. She’s also experienced in creating original, multilingual criminal justice survey instruments for clients including the Fairfax County Police Department and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Outside of research work, Alexis also spent some time as a paralegal in both criminal defense and private practice.
In addition to her criminal justice career, Alexis has received recognition for her academic work in the humanities. While at American University, she co-authored the featured AU Honors book Russian Bears & Puckish Glares. In 2023, she had the privilege of presenting her original argument on critical ethics in child adoption policy at the Rafferty Mathias Research Conference. She also made a living as a craft cocktail bartender in D.C. where she discovered a fascination with food science.
