Luigi Mangione, who has been charged with killing Brian Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthCare before a company investors’ day, was found with a notebook that detailed plans for the shooting, the New York Times reports. The notebook described going to a conference and killing an executive. “What do you do? You wack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention. It’s targeted, precise, and doesn’t risk innocents,” was one passage. The shooting occurred early Dec. 4 as Thompson arrived early at a Hilton hotel to prepare for the investors’ Mangione, 26, was captured Monday after a tip from an employee at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., who was alerted by a customer who recognized him.
Mangione, who faces a murder charge and has been denied bail, is fighting extradition to New York, which starts a process that could take weeks. “He is contesting it,” his lawyer, Thomas Dickey, said on Tuesday. The suspect was found with a ghost gun, a suppressor and false identification cards similar to those believed to have been used by the killer. Authorities found a 262-word handwritten note with him, which begins by appearing to take responsibility for the murder. Mangione shouted: “This is completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people” on Tuesday before he fought being extradited from Pennsylvania. In a hearing, Mangione was denied bail, meaning he will return to custody at Pennsylvania’s Huntingdon state correctional institution while navigating the process to contest extradition, which could take days – if not a month or more, The Guardian reports..Dickey said he would file a petition for a writ of habeas corpus. As detectives begin piecing together Mangione’s history, one area of focus has been the chronic back problems that he appears to have suffered since childhood. Investigators could explore whether Mangione was denied insurance coverage for his condition. He appears to have withdrawn from social connections months earlier, prompting one to write on social media: “I don’t know if you are ok or just in a super isolated place … but I haven’t heard from you in months.”
