U.S. Prison Population Rose 2% Last Year After Dropping 21% In Decade

The U.S. prison population totalled 1,254,200 at year-end 2023, a 2% increase from 2022's 1,230,100, says the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics in a preliminary report. Men comprised 93% of the total, also an increase of 2% from the end of 2022 but a decrease of 21% from 2013's 1,416,100). There were 85,900 women in prison as of last year, an increase of 4% from yearend 2022 but a drop of 18% from 2013. The number of federal prisoners last year dropped 2% from 2022.


Among states with large prison populations, Texas increased from 139,031 to 149,204, Florida rose from 84,688 to 87,207, and Ohio went up from 45,313 to 46,530. California's prison total decreased from 97,608 to 95,827.
