President-elect Trump tapped Chad Mizelle, formerly acting general counsel at the Department of Homeland Security, to serve as chief of staff at the Department of Justice. A Trump loyalist who helped engineer and defend White House border security and deportation initiatives during Trump’s first term, Mizelle will work with attorney general nominee Pam Bondi to deliver on the mass deportations Trump promised during the campaign, Politico reports. “Chad is a MAGA warrior, who will help bring accountability, integrity, and Justice back to the DOJ,” Trump wrote Saturday in a post on Truth Social. Mizelle has already been working with Bondi in Florida on the transition. Mizelle previously served as counsel to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein under Trump before moving to DHS. He is a longtime ally of Stephen Miller, Trump’s immigration adviser and incoming White House deputy chief of staff for policy. Mizelle’s wife, Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, is a Trump-appointed federal judge in Florida.
Also on Saturday, Trump announced the nomination of Aaron Reitz to lead the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Policy, which oversees DOJ’s significant policy initiatives. “Aaron will lead OLP to develop and implement DOJ’s battle plans to advance my Law and Order Agenda, and restore integrity to our Justice System,” the president-elect said. Reitz serves as chief of staff to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and previously served as the self-described “offensive coordinator” in the office of the Texas attorney general, a role that he says drove 46 lawsuits against the Biden administration.
