FAMM, formerly called Families Against Mandatory Minimums), named Shaneva McReynolds as president. She has been involved with FAMM since 2013, most recently as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Organizational Development and as Illinois policy consultant. McReynolds’ is the wife of a former inmate as well as a survivor of violence. Her first husband was murdered in 2008, and no suspect was arrested. McReynolds began working with FAMM during her fight to free her current husband, with whom she has been married for 10 years. He was released from prison in 2015. McReynolds has served as an advocate for reform in her home state of Illinois and across the nation.
FAMM founder Julie Stewart said, “Shaneva’s personal experience with the criminal justice system enables her to speak with passion and conviction about what needs to be fixed, giving her a unique credibility among FAMM members, staff and supporters." Before joining FAMM, McReynolds had a 20-year career working for government contractors in the Department of Defense industry, most recently serving as a vice president of contracts management. FAMM did not say what happened with legal educator Moses Cook, who ws named president of the group earlier this year. Cook had worked for criminal justice reform groups Rising for Justice and DC Justice Lab. Cook succeeded Kevin Ring, who was president of FAMM from 2017 to 2023, when he joined Arnold Ventures. FAMM, founded in 1991, says it has helped "more than half a million people receive shorter, fairer prison sentences."
