SC Supreme Court, Selected by Legislators, Could Be All White Men

South Carolina lawmakers could potentially diversify the state Supreme Court or it could become the only all-male, all-white high court in the nation through at least 2028, reports the South Carolina Daily Gazette. South Carolina is one of two states where legislatures select judges. Among the six candidates for the vacancy left by retirement of Chief Justice Don Beatty, the court's only Black justice, three are white men and three are women, two of them women of color.

South Carolina already had the only all-male Supreme Court in the nation. Whomever replaces Beatty, as chosen by lawmakers, will shape the look of the court for some time. A seat isn’t likely to come available for more than four years.
