Prominent Anti-Sexual-Violence Group Removes Mention Of Trans People To Maintain Federal Funding

Crime and Justice News

The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), a  nonprofit organization dedicated to combating sexual assault has removed all mentions of transgender people from its website in an effort to maintain federal funding. RAINN, which provides a hotline for reporting sexual violence said that the changes were made to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting trans people, the Washington Post reports. Organizations that do not follow the directives, many of which are being challenged in court, are at risk of losing federal grants. “Our mission has not changed,” a RAINN spokesperson said, “and all of our services remain available to all survivors of sexual violence.”

Trans people are four times more likely to be victims of violent crime, including sexual violence, according to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law. A 2015 study from the National Center for Transgender Equality found that nearly half of the 27,715 trans people who responded had experienced sexual assault. The material wiped from RAINN’s website include a page featuring trans survivor stories and another page about RAINN’s inclusion policy, according to archived material from independent journalist Mady Castigan. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) also deleted blog posts about trans people on its website, according to Castigan, but kept online a catalogue of organizations dedicated to helping the trans community.
