The New York City Police Department is preparing to revoke former President Donald Trump’s license to carry a gun, a senior police official told CNN. Trump’s New York concealed carry license was quietly suspended on April 1, 2023, following his indictment on criminal charges in New York, the official said. Two of the three pistols he was licensed to carry were turned over to the NYPD on March 31, 2023, and a third gun listed on Trump’s license “was lawfully moved to Florida,” the person added. But because possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is a federal crime, Trump – who was convicted of 34 felonies on May 30, 2024 -- could be in violation of multiple state and federal laws if he still possesses that third gun in Florida. (As a former president, Trump still has full-time U.S. Secret Service protection.)
Yet the situation with Trump underscores the lack of federal procedure for how recently convicted felons should surrender their guns after a verdict, The Trace reports. In court, Justice Juan Merchan did not immediately ask Trump to surrender any firearms after the jury returned its verdict, according to the trial transcript. By the time The Trace published its story on Thursday, Merchan had not issued any post-conviction restrictions at all. At the time, the Trace had asked around, with no luck. “We asked the Manhattan district attorney, the U.S. Justice Department, the NYPD, and the office of Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida — where Trump officially declared himself a resident in 2019 — whether they plan to enforce the felon gun ban in regards to the former president. None responded.”
