Congress Looks to Limit Power of Judges Who Rule Against Trump

Crime and Justice News

House Republicans don’t have the votes to impeach federal judges, as President Donald Trump has demanded. So they’re looking at other options, Politico reports. One likely possibility is a bill by Rep. Darrell Issa that would limit federal judges’ ability to issue far-reaching injunctions. House GOP leaders are looking to put that measure on the floor in early April. Trump himself railed against the injunctions Issa’s bill targets in a social media post Thursday evening. The legislation would need 60 votes to pass the Senate, meaning Democrats could block it.

Hard-liners are floating other ideas, as well. Some are discussing cutting off federal funding for the federal district court in Washington and other lower courts — something that could come up in the fiscal 2026 spending fight. Other members are also considering one-off resolutions that condemn recent judicial rulings against Trump. But Issa's injunction legislation could satisfy hard-liners — and maybe Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk — without spending valuable time and political capital on doomed impeachments. Though impeachments aren't likely to go anywhere -- it would take 67 senators to remove judges -- Trump allies are signaling they’ll still push forward with impeachments. Members have already introduced resolutions targeting federal judges, including U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, whom Trump lambasted after the judge sought to block some deportation flights.
